Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explain Luxembourg people’s high scores on the measure of happiness by looking into the relationship between happiness and culture, as measured by the command of a language. More specifically, Hofstede’s ‘Individualism/Collectivism’, ‘Power Distance’, ‘Masculinity/Femininity’, ‘Uncertainty Avoidance’, ‘Long-Term Orientation/Short-Term Orientation’, ‘Indulgence versus Restraint’ and ‘Monumentalism’, as well as Happiness, (Diener and Lucas, 2000 ) are measured and calculated by obtaining responses from 134 employees who work at Lindab Buildings in Luxembourg, France and Germany. No significant differences were found between Hofstede’s estimates for the dimensions of culture in Luxembourg as well as his scores for Germany and the current study’s results for Lindab in Luxembourg and Germany. Differences were found between Hofstede’s and Lindab results for France and for Luxembourgers who command the Luxembourgish language, indicating that language is an identifier of culture. Happiness was found to be related to Indulgence and to Long-Term Orientation.

LUXEMBOURG- Le «Science Slam» mêlera spectacles et disciplines universitaires.

Imaginez un exposé de chimie joué comme une pièce de théâtre, une étude de biologie inspirée d’un clip de Metallica. Autant d’exemples dont pourraient se rapprocher les différentes présentations des jeunes chercheurs et doctorants à l’occasion du «Science Slam», mercredi soir, au Casino-Forum d’art contemporain à Luxembourg. «Chaque inscrit disposera de dix minutes pour présenter son domaine d’étude de façon la plus ludique possible», explique François Conrad, organisateur de l’événement.

La soirée sent déjà bon la surprise… même le nombre de participants est encore gardé secret. «Toutes les disciplines sont les bienvenues sur scène. Chacun pourra s’exprimer en français, en anglais, en allemand ou en luxembourgeois», ajoute Laura Lakaff, doctorante en littérature allemande. En organisant cette soirée, l’ASBL LuxDoc, l’association des jeunes chercheurs et doctorants luxembourgeois, compte tordre le cou à une fausse image: «On pense trop souvent que les chercheurs sont ennuyeux. Nous voulons combattre ces clichés en sortant des présentations type Powerpoint», détaille Laura.

Pour cela, les étudiants parient sur l’inventivité des chercheurs et sur la liberté qu’offre le slam, bien que le concept dépasse les contours du genre musical, comme le précise Laura: «Les présentations ne seront pas forcément des poésies. En réalité, nous avons surtout cherché à nous inspirer de l’esprit du mouvement».
