” (JB) Luxembourg’s annual rally against cancer got underway on Saturday evening at the Coque leisure centre in Kirchberg.

During the opening ceremony, a number of former cancer patients and carers described their harrowing experiences with cancer before joining the “Survivor and Caregiver Tour” of the running track.

The uplifting and life-affirming event will see more than 10,000 people run, walk and cycle in relay teams over 12 or 24 hours.

Relais pour la vie is a chance for people to show solidarity with cancer patients, to show support for their families and to remember those taken away by cancer.

It also raises funds for cancer research in Luxembourg and for support and care facilities.

The relay ends with a moving candlelit ceremony on Sunday at 5pm. Candles are placed inside paper bags which are decorated with images and messages created by participants in the event. All are welcome to attend.

(JB) More than 1,100 runners and nordic walkers of all ages headed for the park in the capital on Sunday morning to participate in the first edition of the RBC Race for Kids.

The event was one of a handful of family-friendly, five-kilometre runs organised around the world in aid of children’s charities.

The Luxembourg edition was hosted in the municipal park in Luxembourg City in mild weather conditions and featured Tour de France 2010 champion Andy Schleck as its patron.

The event raised 61,000 euros which will go to the Luxembourg Red Cross family therapy centre “Kannerhaus Jean“.

Luxembourg City

ING Night Marathon comes to town

PHOTO Christian Kemp

(CS) The ING Night Marathon returns to Luxembourg City today (May 30), bringing a big party to town but also disruptions to public transport and accessibility.

Throughout the day, roads across the capital will remain open, although parking will be prohibited along the marathon circuit. From 5pm the first streets in Kirchberg around Luxexpo will close and from 7pm the entire circuit will be closed. It will gradually reopen as the runners pass, with roads expected to be fully accessible from around 1am.

A number of crossings have been set up where pedestrians and motorists will be allowed to pass in intervals. Please consult the map below to see the route and crossings. Undertopographie.lu a map of the circuit is also available. Click on “ING Night Marathon 2015” for additional options.

The road closures will also impact the bus network, with connections between the City centre towards Kirchberg and the central train station affected in particular. A shuttle bus service has been set up between Place de Bruxelles and Place de Paris.

From P&R Bouillon there will also be a bus shuttle to Luxexpo every 10 to 15 minutes, passing the Glacis car park. The “navette bleu” will begin its service at 12pm on Saturday and make its final journey around 3am at night. A shuttle bus will also circulate between P&R Luxembourg-Sud and Luxexpo.

A hotline (+352 26 48 22 48) has been set up for questions about the City bus services, open on the day of the marathon from 8am until the end of the event. In the run-up to Saturday, the hotline is open from 8am until 12pm and from 1.30pm until 5pm daily.

For a full list of bus services and how they will be diverted during the marathon visit vdl.lu. For RGTR bus network changes consult mobiliteit.lu. The Night Marathon website also has a timetable of the shuttle bus services and more useful information in its runner’s handbook.

Party along the way

Despite the traffic inconvenience, the marathon promises once more to be a big event, with music and entertainment at 50 stops along the circuit. For the first time this year, the marathon will feature the so-called LEO Light Village, with over 1,000 lanterns and light installations set up along Val de la Pétrusse.

Along the final stretch towards Luxexpo 18 DJs will motivate the runners to keep on going, while fire artists will entertain the crowds. Over 1,200 volunteers will help the event run smoothly.

There are also a number of unusual runners signed up this year. Wah Sing Tan from Malaysia will aim to run the marathon barefoot, while Manu Cuadra will walk on stilts. Dietmar Mücke is hoping for an entry in the Guinness World Records book by pushing an office chair along the 42.2 kilometre route.

Deaf-mute runner Jörg Rosenbaum will tackle the course with deaf-mute and visually impaired runner Ralf Buschmann. The oldest competitor meanwhile is 82-year-old Josy Simon from Luxembourg. A sight to behold will also be Olivier Hamar from Belgium, who will run in historic Napoleonic costume.

Welcome to the small Grand Duchy!

At dusk, in the narrow streets and alleys of the old town, never-ending rows of spectators standing on both sides of the course, absolute pandemonium at Place Guillaume, the quiet green parks in the city centre, small festivals in the exclusive residential areas.

Marathon in Luxembourg – it is far more than just running. It is a short vacation during a long weekend, it is culture and shopping, it is Samba festival and fair at the same time. Luxembourg is one of the most beautiful European capitals, small and exquisite with a pinch of extravagance. Here, a historic town centre grown on steep sandstone rocks, there, a modern and vivid banking and financial centre on top of the Kirchberg. The ING Night Marathon Luxembourg forges links between the different parts of town, between sports and culture, between the more than 100 nationalities living in town. Become part of this great running movement in the small Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Celebrate with us in the small alleys of the town centre, in the elegant philharmonic building.

We will be pleased to meet you in Luxembourg!

LUXEMBURG
PATRICK VERSALL
